Choosing a paint palette for your home should be an enjoyable experience, but too often it becomes stressful. Whether you are overwhelmed by the number of options or you worry about making the wrong choices, picking a paint palette may be the last thing you want to do. However, it will eventually need to be done. Below are a few tips to consider when taking on this task.
Playing It Safe
If you want to keep things simple, or if you’re planning on selling soon, choose white or cream for the walls. These colors give your room a clean, neutral look. They can also be painted over easily. Plus, white is a great backdrop for interior decorating.
On the topic of decorating, look at what patterns and colors you already have in the room. Choose light colors from the largest of these, like your couch or a throw rug. Then, when you decorate, use the darker, cooler colors to tie everything together by adding decor like pillows, vases, and artwork.
Color According To Room
Think about the function of the room before you choose paint for it. For example, bathrooms are commonly done in cool colors, like blue, teal, or grey. Living rooms are done in lighter, brighter colors, like yellow. A dining room could be done in deep reds and browns.
Just don’t deviate too far from your chosen color scheme. Limit yourself to two or three main colors, and then choose additional shades from a gradient of that color. These shades can be used for detail work like trim, curtains, and floors.
The Color Wheel
If you’re still trying to make a palette but don’t want strictly monochromatic colors, try using (or combining it with) a color wheel. A quick google search can bring up dozens.
Once you’ve decided on a main color, use the wheel to choose secondary colors. This can be in the form of complementary colors (the color directly across) or analogous colors (the two on either side). Use variations on these hues for your ideal palette.
If you are still concerned about choosing the right palette for your home, you may want to consult an interior designer or home builder. Both will have experience with this sort of thing and should be able to guide you in the right direction.
